Chapter Fifteen – Distraction Spell Number Two

Five minutes later, they were back outside. Shannon thought they should probably tour all the sports facilities on their way, so as to keep up the Open Day pretence.

“Football, Hockey, Cricket, Netball, Athletics,” she recited as they walked, “oh, and obviously Tennis,” she added with a grin. Jax and Darius tried to nod as if they knew what she were talking about. Shannon had picked up a couple of basketballs from the PE cupboard, and Jax and Darius were bouncing them experimentally as they walked along.

When they arrived at the row of outside courts, Shannon was glad to see that the far court did still have its hoops. The boys wasted no time in trying some practice shots, finding it surprisingly difficult to send the ball accurately to its target. It had looked so simple during the match they had just watched.

“It would be so much easier if…” Jax muttered to Darius.

“No Jax,” replied Darius in a low voice. “Using magic would be cheating. Not to mention dangerous as well.”

“Yes, but using magic is what we do,” Jax argued. “Who are we if we’re not magicians?”

“We’re not magicians today,” said Darius firmly.

“Get on with it!” shouted Penny from the edge of the court. “Or do you want me and Shannon to come and show you how it’s done?”

“You play?” asked Darius.

“Better than you!” responded Penny with a cheeky grin. She walked towards them, rolling up the sleeves of her shirt as she did so. As she got close to Darius, he backed away, bouncing the basketball by his side.

Easily, she took possession of the ball, bounced it a few steps and then threw it to Shannon, who made a perfect shot into the hoop at her end of the court.

“Aliens can’t play basketball apparently!” called Shannon. Jax and Darius rose to the challenge. As they practiced a bit more, they started to improve, until they started to score occasionally.

Everyone was disappointed when the bell rang for the end of school. But Shannon reminded Jax and Darius that they were going to the cinema, and they cheered up immediately.

“Is Penny coming with us?” asked Darius. “I mean, if she wants to of course,” he added hastily.

“I’d love to,” said Penny quickly, “I mean, if you want me to of course.”

Shannon grinned. “What about what Jax and I want? Can we check that too?” she teased.

“Ha, ha, very funny,” responded Penny, trying not to look embarrassed.

The cinema trip was a great success. Jax and Darius were genuinely amazed by the experience. Though Shannon had warned them that most of what they would see was special effects and not real, they soon forgot this, and became totally immersed in the story.

Jax held Shannon’s hand, and to her amusement, his grip definitely tightened during the scary parts. As they emerged into the early evening sunshine afterwards, both boys looked a bit dazed while they struggled to get their minds back to reality.
